Buy Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons

Originally I checked out this book from my local library, Belleville Public Library, and read it. It was full of common-sense suggestions for raising boys, and since my husband and I raised two boys we had some of the same experiences and agreed with the author. My son is raising two boys of his own as a single divorced parent. Therefore we provided him with a copy of the book.Get more detail about Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons.

Purchase The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family

After determining that the first book was really a work of FICTION, I started to read this book because it claimed that questions would be answered.

That turned out to be a sales gimmick!

There were no answers, no explanations, no closure... merely the further embellishments of the author through the foster care system.

If I want fiction, I at least want fiction that is honest enough to be in the fiction section of the bookstore!

Where To Buy Why Men Marry Bitches: A Woman's Guide to Winning Her Man's Heart

I am a single 30 year old female. I got this book out of curiosity since it was so highly rated and glad I did. It IS worth the read. Looking back at the relationships I have been in, good and bad, most (not all) of this book is dead on!!!

CONS:
I HOPE that the women who read this book don't believe everything they read and don't do everything she says or take it too literally. I know that if I did some of the things she suggested, any decent man would look at me like I'm crazy and tell me not to play games and just tell them what the heck is going on. They would think I was immature for not just talking to them. Through a lot of the book, whether it is comical or not, she too often refers to men as being lying manipulative jerks who test you and get away with as much as they can, for as long as they can. Instead she suggests you manipulate them? I'd be ticked as guy if my woman did some of the things she suggests. She seems to have just interviewed one type of man. Unfortunately some men DO like a woman who shuts up and does what she is told, and some DO like women who fight and create drama. She also takes things to the extreme. For example I don't believe men really need for you to act like virgin- just not a slut! And they aren't purposefully manipulating you or testing you- they are just inconsiderate and selfish.

PROS:
While you wouldn't guess it from the above, there are more pros than cons in this book. Argov uses great analogies and great quotes to drive her point home. She uses a simple format that easy to read and relate to. It is a solid reminder that women who are doormats do not achieve happiness. She doesn't really mean "bitch", she really means self-confident, fun, empowered, and independent woman. This is not a book that will be going to Goodwill. I am lending this to my female friends as soon as possible(single and married). There so many women who become doormats not realizing that they are reinforcing the behavior in some way. They just get sad or angry but nothing changes. This book is FAR better than He's Just Not That Into You, which had no solutions, just makes you feel bad. Argov gives real scenarios and examples and how to deal with them. She tells you what to say, and what not to say. Also, many of these principles can be applied outside romantic relationships as well. She uses a quote by Donald Trump, pointing out that we should speak up when appropriate anywhere and gain respect by doing so. I thought of my boss and co-workers.

I am actually excited and motivated after reading this book to not put up with crap but to walk out when I have to. This book really solidifies that I need to work on my self-esteem (as do a lot of women). I think I will get a good book on that in order to reinforce what I learned in this book.Get more detail about Why Men Marry Bitches: A Woman's Guide to Winning Her Man's Heart.

The Art of Happiness

I bought this book when it first came out in 1998. A very good friend of mine is going through a troubling time in his life and when he confided in me his problems this book first came to mind. Not being able to find my copy after moving from California to Kansas I knew Amazon would have it in stock as they always do.
This book is not the first but is a very good teaching of Buddhism as seen through the eye's of the Dahlai Lama's eastern philosophy and a mixture of Western psychology brought together with an openness that works well with each other.

Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving--and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity Top Quality

I got this book and another book about running about a month ago. I am planning on running my first marathon in January of 2011 and started training for it. I was looking for some reading materials to help get me mentally prepared for it. I read the marathon-specific book first, thinking it would be most helpful in this endevour. It was written by a world class marathon runner and while it was informative, gave very valuable information and even entertaining, I just did not connect with the author because she is a world class athlete and I am not and never will be. I just kept thinking, "If running a marathon was my JOB, I'd probably not have any problem doing t either". After I finished it I picked up "Run Like a Mother". It has done more for my mental preparation than I realized it would. From the intro (emails that sounded like something exchanged between my college roommate and I), I was hooked. No subject is off limits, from the physical and psychological benefits of running to periods and pregnancy and even panties, Sarah and Dimity cover it all in this witty and honest book. I felt they were saying everything I have ever thought or felt about trying to maintain the juggling act that is being a mother, wife, employee and runner. That's why I pose the question, "Did I write this book?"Get more detail about Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving--and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity.

The Lives Our Mothers Leave Us: Prominent Women Discuss the Complex, Humorous, and Ultimately Loving Relationships They Have with Their Mothers Immediately

This is going to be short. I decided to purchase copies of this book for my daughters whose mother (we were divorced) died very suddenly just before Christmas. I gave the book to them for Mother's Day. But I hadn't read it yet, unfortunately. Patti Davis's account of her relationship with her mother is brilliant. Poignant. And that is what it should have remained, a single piece, not expanded into a book in which Patti Davis writes about other daughters and their relationships with their mothers. There is no voice in the rest of the book. Buyer beware!Get more detail about The Lives Our Mothers Leave Us: Prominent Women Discuss the Complex, Humorous, and Ultimately Loving Relationships They Have with Their Mothers.

The Fifth Agreement Get it now!

For those who have noticed that one's person's truth seems to be another's lie. If you are like me, then you have become confused by this notion and wondered whether there is a Truth that is common to us all and how to align one's self to this Truth. Perhaps you have been connected to this Truth and realized that it, in fact, lies within you. Then perhaps you have come to the realization that this authentic Self which is an embodiment of the Truth is not so easy to unfold as it is covered by layers and layers of spoon fed beliefs and conventional assumptions since childhood. Often these beliefs and assumptions conflict with each other, giving rise to a nagging doubts about what is real or imagined, even concerning our very self. Perhaps we have once had an elusive sense of understanding during which we have felt what life could be and truly is, but from lack of being able to conceptualize it, we have forgotten its substance and lost the living creative power of this inner knowledge. For a subject as complex and daunting as the very nature of reality as we know it, and the role our beliefs (or owned assumptions) play in shaping our own reality, "The Fifth Agreement" does a great job in explaining it all. Furthermore this sequel to "The Four Agreements" promises a Fifth Agreement which, although more abstruse then the preceding four, has the potential of guiding us towards finding who we really are (Our Authentic Self) in all the perfection of our "imperfect" individual Self.Get more detail about The Fifth Agreement.

The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal Buy Now

I read this book this morning and I found it to be useless. Mainly, the book frames its goal as becoming a "corporate athlete" and out of this root idea that I disagree with, the book goes on to tell you that humans get energy, spend energy, rest and get excited...and all that that we already know. None of this was actionable, but what was actionable was the psychological shift to becoming a "corporate athlete."

I prefer to think about how my engagements and pursuits in life, such as professional projects like jobs, can enhance my overall life, or how to use that energy to truly productive - and that's why I bought this book, for things of that sort. But it seems this book is written by those company motivator-types that come and tell everyone to get M-M-M motivated! \o/

Outside of the basics, food and rest and things we can manage easily when the rest is in order - when it comes to energy, engagement, our attention and enthusiasm - the meaningful questions seem to be - how do we get engaged? what keeps our attention and why? on what grounds do we gain enthusiasm for things? etc etc.........because the truth is - if you find work to be a not engaging, psyching yourself out will only go so far - there's probably something else going on - maybe the job just sucks, maybe it's how you go about it, or maybe it's how the goals are aligned there. It could be management, it could be relationships, it could be all sorts of things - but reading a book telling you "Oh, you should be engaged! People that are engaged and excited, they do better!" Like seriously....I don't know why this book has such high ratings....it's like hearing your father ramble in monotone about the virtues of being a hard worker - or someone telling you how you have to life fully and with a smile, because it's the way to go --- well, everyone would if they could. Out of a self-improvement book I expect meaningful actionable content.

There's a recent book on how the mind goes into states of truly complete engagement and what the conditions are, and it's called "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I strongly recommend that book. Understanding that won't be the "last thing you ever needed to learn" (how boring would that be anyway?), but I felt I got a lot more out of understanding that, even in the central ideas, than reading through this book this morning.Get more detail about The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal.

Practicing the Power of Now Order Now

I think this book is great if you are starting out on your spiritual journey, but I found that there wasn't a lot of material once we understood what NOW means. Don't get me wrong. It is a very essential aspect that needs to be understood and then tried to be lived. Tolle gives meditations and example of how to go about this and this is all helpful. But what I found most profound was Tolle's explanation of the pain body and particularly womens's historical pain body. So much truth in there, and really helps to understand how women have seen themselves as second class citizens for so long. Just for that part of the book it was worth the read.

Discount Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is defined as: a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to chance by exploring and resolving ambivalence.

Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change is an excellent resource for anyone working with individuals or groups of people who are facing ambivalence regarding change. The change can range from drug/alcohol abuse, quitting smoking, medical issues, losing weight, relationship changes, starting an exercise program, changing careers, etc.

The book begins with a chapter on "Why do people change?" People tend to be creatures of habit and change can be a very difficult and disturbing process to go through. There is also a discussion on whether people are ready, willing and able to change along with issues that trigger change. The book then moves on to the topic of ambivalence and why people have such a difficult time with making changes especially if the changes are beneficial such as in quitting smoking, dealing with addictions, taking necessary medications, etc. Facilitating change is difficult and can be a lengthy process. One often develops discrepancy, deals with self-motivating change talk and dealing with the status quo.

Part II of the book enters the practice of Motivational Interviewing and delves into the four general principles:

1. Express empathy
2. Develop discrepancy
3. Roll with resistance
4. Support self-efficacy

Then there is a discussion on change and resistance which is essentially the consonance and dissonance of change. Interviewing traps are discussed and plenty of examples are provided.

Five specific methods are then reviewed in depth:

1. Ask open ended questions
2. Listen reflectively
3. Affirmations
4. Summarizations
5. Eliciting change talk
Once again plenty of examples are provided.

There are following chapters on responding to change talk, responding to resistance, enhancing confidence to strengthening commitments. There is also a chapter on Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change. MI techniques are to be applied differently depending on which Stage of Change a person is in.

Originally, MI was developed for use by counselors but these techniques can be utilized by many other professions. The techniques are very easy to learn but very difficult to apply. Don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity as it does take a lot of practice to become familiar with the spirit and essence of Motivational Interviewing and then have the skill to apply the different techniques. MI is a great skill for police officers, corrections officers, detention officers, probation and parole officers, managers, military investigators, military interrogators, sports coaches and anyone who regularly deals with individuals who have ambivalence.

Motivational Interviewing, Second Edition: Preparing People for Change is an excellent resource that has many practical uses and applications both professionally and personally. Plenty of examples are utilized throughout the book that will guide you along.

Purchase Flow

I read this book a few years back and was completely by blown away by the eloquence of the author and his incredible insights. I appreciate his numerous citations to history as well as traditional references and that they are purposefully not represented as footnotes. In my readings, he is singly able to looks across cultures to find universal truths.

I suppose that this book would be found in the "Self-Help" or "Psychology" section of the bookstore, but it is not a book of lists of how to be happy. It is more of a delicious dissertation... it is so rich in content. I was looking for it recently, as I was finding myself off balance and not coping with the stresses of daily life adequately.

Briefly, FLOW strives to recognize that "being in the flow" is not accidental. It is not genius. It is not based on your economic status or your state of health. It is not a given that it carries over from one aspect of your life to another easily. It's fostered by an awareness and acceptance of yourself and the idea that you need to give yourself adequate challenges. Probably the most essential part of the book for me at this time are the last two chapters that address how to make sense of tragedy and decide what it is that you are living for so you can rise above it. This book raises interesting moral questions, and above all, seems relevant in every aspect to modern life. Be prepared to be influenced in a new, positive way. I have this in paperback and now Kindle.Get more detail about Flow.

The Anatomy of Peace Review

I read this book because my son is attending the Anasazi Institute in Arizona. I was hoping it would be helpful but it's very cliche and I'm quite sure that if the Arbinger Institute had the answer to world peace, someone would have stopped the end to "warring hearts" by now.

The Muslim and Jew character coincidentally lose their fathers coincidentally due to the Mideast Conflict. The main character, Lou, is an artificial composite character who is gruff, successful, steady, but clueless about feelings. His long-suffering wife is under-appreciated but patient and kind. In a breakthrough moment she admits to feeling some resentment for certain things such as being alone while giving birth when hard-working Lou was at a business meeting; having a son who is a delinquent and a few other tales. She is the wife in Father Knows Best and the humor is canned. The reader is supposed to chuckle and be heart warmed when surprisingly, Lou sees the error of his ways as the result of the Muslim and Jew supposedly literally having the answer to world peace.

Another breakthrough moment is when Lou stubbornly realizes he shouldn't treat people at objects. The caricatures of the homeless people in the book were particularly offensive.

If you liked The Secret, you will think this book is an achievement. Anyone with a BA degree in English could have written it, and maybe someone else should with more textured, complex and genuine characters than the "bushy-haired" Jew. I found the book had subtle racist and elitist views and for this reason it's disturbing. It also doesn't do justice to the roles women play in a family, so for that reason it came across as sexist to me.

Whether you like this book will likely depend upon how much and often you read and whether you buy into sterotypes.Get more detail about The Anatomy of Peace.

Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else Order Now

Author Geoff Colvin rejects the popular notion that the genius of a Tiger Woods, a Mozart or a Warren Buffett is inborn uniquely to only a few individuals. He cites research that refutes the value of precocious, innate ability and he provides numerous examples of the intensely hard work that high achievement demands. Best performers' intense, "deliberate practice" is based on clear objectives, thorough analysis, sharp feedback, and layered, systematic work. getAbstract finds that Colvin makes his case clearly and convincingly. He shows readers how to use hard work and deliberate practice to improve their creative achievements, their work and their companies. The author's argument about the true nature of genius is very engaging, but, in the end, he makes it clear that the requirements of extraordinary achievement remain so stringent that society, after all, turns out to have very few geniuses. Colvin admits that the severe demands of true, deliberate practice are so painful that only a few people master it, but he also argues that you can benefit from understanding the nature of great performance. Perhaps, he says, the real gift of genius is the capacity for determined practice. You can improve your ability to create and innovate once you accept that even talent isn't a free ticket to great performance. It takes work.Get more detail about Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else.

Will I Ever Be Good Enough?: Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers Decide Now

I did not know about NPD before reading this book. From the first page every single word and description matched exactly my experience. Some of the examples of stories of women who have been suffering from their mothers with NPD matched very closely my own experiences. It was amazing to see other people very different from me experiencing exactly identical situations and finally to start to understand how my own mom has been projecting her own insecurities on me and that it is not me the one with the issues. It was very refreshing to know that all of the things she has been criticizing me for all of my life, the constant put-downs disguised as jokes and the slight offenses when comparing me always unfavorably to other people had no basis and are not true. I feel lucky that I had these important realizations early in my life (I am in my early twenties) so that I can start working on them and hopefully not to pass them to my children (if I decide to have any later in life) the way my grandmother has passed them to my mom.Get more detail about Will I Ever Be Good Enough?: Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers.

Save Stumbling on Happiness

This is a fun and interesting book that was quite enjoyable. It combines Scientific Research with Philosophy and Humor. He spends a lot of time talking about the results of various studies that show how our minds work and how we fill in the blank areas of our perceptions of the past, present and future. This filling in colors how we remember the past or imagine the future, and is influenced by how we are feeling in the present. The fact that we don't realize this is happening can lead us to believe in our own fantasies, and then to make important life decisions based on them. He also shows that we often sabotage our happiness by doing things like keeping our options open or conflating things that give us pleasure with things that make us happy. Sometimes we pursue goals thinking that they will lead us to a state of happiness only to find that our happiness after achieving the goal is short lived or perhaps less intense than we imagined it would be. Often that's because we failed to factor in how the human mind works as well as various other issues pertaining to the nature of happiness. These things are explored in depth by Daniel Gilbert, and possible solutions are examined.Get more detail about Stumbling on Happiness.

Discount Skinny Bitch in the Kitch

I've been a vegan for a number of years and this book is - quite frankly - a pitiful, embarrassing misrepresentation of plant-based diets. The majority of the recipes rely heavily on processed fake meats and cheeses (e.g. a "recipe" for a chef's salad is basically some lettuce, sliced fake ham, sliced fake turkey, sliced fake cheese, etc., ditto with the majority of the paninis and sandwiches), which should **not** be the basis of any healthy diet. I mean, I love a good fake burger from time to time, but only in moderation. It would have been nice to see more recipes based around unprocessed staples...vegetables, grains, beans and such.

In sum: Ew. This book has absolutely nothing of value to offer. If you're looking for a legitimately healthy means of dropping weight, I'd recommend one of Christina Pirello's whole foods cookbooks, instead.Get more detail about Skinny Bitch in the Kitch.

Cheap The Fairy Godmothers and Other Tales

I have enjoyed all of the free fairy-tale type stories available for the Kindle. I have read many of them in the last few months, including this one. A few weeks after finishing this book, it still stands out as one of my favorites. After seeing that not very many readers have reviewed this book, I felt compelled to share my opinion. If you like to read fairy-tale type stories for children (Grimm's fairy tales and the like), then this book is highly recommended.
I also thought the themes of the stories were pretty original, when compared with other, older fairy-tales. The reader isn't always 100% sure how the story would turn out.Get more detail about The Fairy Godmothers and Other Tales.

Order Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs

Anyone who cares about children and the future should read this book. Obviously, parents are those who will most benefit from the simple and effective suggestions for developing in their children the seven skills the author talks about. But I think this is also a must-read for educators, grandparents like me, etc. Full of excellent research, great ideas, delightful anecdotes. Not a reference book to sit on the shelf - this one should be kept handy.Get more detail about Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs.

Very informative and has lots of products information to check out for yourself.
Receipes that the author has tried and recommends so its practical information to use. Also little mentioned information to help the individual work with this
condition in the best possible way and in conjunction with their doctor. I recommend.Get more detail about The Thyroid Diet.

Your Pregnancy Week By Week, 5th Edition (Your Pregnancy Series)

I was thoroughly disappointed by this book. I've done a lot of research about pregnancy and childbirth and was hoping this book would be a nice way to keep up with my baby's development and the changes going on in my body. The information presented in the book is barely informative. The doctors give a tiny bit of information about every single complication that could possibly arise in pregnancy (no matter how rare) and it really just serves to get a pregnant lady a bit paranoid! Meanwhile, if you actually had any of these complications, you would certainly need more thorough information than what is presented in this book. There's also a severe lack of information about the accuracy/reliability of the various tests and procedures associated with pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
The back cover claims that the book is "the most medically up-to-date" however there is blatant misinformation given about home births. It states in no uncertain terms that home births are NOT SAFE. However the most medically up-to-date research actually finds that for healthy women at low risk for complications who choose skilled and experienced caregivers and have a good system in place for transfer to a hospital when necessary, giving birth at home is JUST AS SAFE as giving birth in a hospital. There is also research showing that moms who planned to give birth at home (regardless of where they actually had their babies) ended up with fewer interventions, such as episiotomies and c-sections, compared with a group of equally low-risk women who had planned hospital deliveries.
The best two features of the book are the weekly updates about fetal developement and the weekly exercises. In my opinion, you're better off using one of the many pregnancy websites for updates about fetal development (like [...]) and reading The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth.
