I'm a big fan of Dr. Dobson's, so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. It seemed that there was little practical advice. Instead, there were pages upon pages of warning about how depraved our culture has become and how toxic it is to girls. It was filled with discouraging statistics. There is a place for such warnings and such statistics, but I thought that this book focused on them without providing the counterbalance--the advice of how to help our daughters grow strong and healthy, avoiding becoming one of those statistics. Despite this, there were a few gems in the book. The one that stands out the most for me was the early emphasis on the role of the father--too many fathers do not realize how important they are in their daughters' lives, right from the beginning. The early part of this book did a good job in pointing that out. After those couple of chapters, however, it was all negatives and no advice for how to avoid them. I hoped for better from Dr. Dobson.Get more detail about Bringing Up Girls.

Cheap Heroes for My Son
I thought I'd buy one for each of my two littlest grandchildren but thought it best to buy only one at first to see what I thought of it ...... and I'm so glad I did!
Eleanor Roosevelt's caption ends with that dreaded phrase, "social justice", the tip off that there might be socialism (or worse) afoot, so at this point, I became wary.
Then further into the book, I see our president listed as one of the heros, and the text describes his father merely as, an "economist", and his mother, as a "girl from Kansas". While I understand the inappropriateness of describing Obama's parents as fully as one would in a book for adults, it would have been smarter to just say, "... his father and mother".
Beck's radio show and TV program are very informative, but this book is way too thin on facts to be of much use to adult or child. Maybe Glenn Beck could explain to his viewing audience how it is that he recommended this book even though one of its heros is Obama!
In the end, I understand why one reader shredded some of its pages. I also agree with those who feel some of the chosen entries are merely interesting or famous, not heroic.
If you're Liberal, order it, but if you're Conservative, you might think twice.

Buying Last Lecture, The
In his book, The last Lecture, author Randy Pausch tells how he used the "last lecture" which is afforded much respected and loved college professors (which Randy obviously was) to leave thoughts for the faculty and student body.
In his case, Randy used the occasion of the "last lecture" not only to leave thoughts for the faculty and students but also to impart his philosphy of life...which as simply put "to live"!
I gav e this book to my oldest granddaughter without aving read it but then read it about a year later. I am glad I gave her the book.
It is a paen to life and living.
His last lecture nd the book he penned after giving the lecture is a paen to life. Although cancer claimed him in 2008, there is one indisputable fact ... Randy lives on!

Purchase The 48 Laws of Power
As I began to read this book I thought it had to be a cynically bad joke. This book epitomizes the exploitative mentality of Adolf Hitler and other megalomaniacs. It reads like the handbook of a slave owner, both ugly and self serving. This man is truly deluded and indoctrinated by the last 5000 years of competitive class society and the consciousness of individualism produced by it. He has no understanding or awareness of collectivity and/or collaboration as it exists outside of class competition and the exploitative private property relations found in modern capitalism. This book is a cultural disappointment and a sad reflection of just how far we have to go as a society to actually produce a decent world to live in. The book is abysmal and depressing, and buying it is the equivalent of supporting fascism, its theories and practices.Get more detail about The 48 Laws of Power.
Order My Horizontal Life
Lighten up, people! This woman is hilarious!! I recently read Ms. Handler's middle book (awesomely-titled after a Judy Blume novel), and I thought it was absolutely perfect. My husband bought me her first and her third books for Mothers' Day this past weekend. I read the first book in one sitting...and loved it! This woman is crazy and irreverent and sardonic. This book is laugh-out-loud funny, and the author is so intelligent and witty and self-deprecating (throughout the entire book she is painfully and incredibly aware of her own short-comings), that you can't help but love her!!! Shame on you readers who do not "get it"! She is blatantly inviting you to be in on the joke!!Get more detail about My Horizontal Life.
Where To Buy The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated: Expanded and Updated, With Over 100 New Pages of Cutting-Edge Content.
As some of the other reviewers here, I also thought that Tim Ferriss outsourced much of the content of this book, thereby putting in full practice what he preaches. However, I haven't read the first version of the book and therefore as a first read I found The 4-hour workweek a compelling read. I got it yesterday and could not put it down until I had finished it, a few hours later. On top of the sharing the main philosophy of the book (working effectively rather than working for the sake of hard work), I found the book choke full of resources and practical resources that would suit both an employee seeking freedom from his daily entrapment and an entrepreneur looking for some breathing air from his business.

The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life Review
This was an interesting and thought provoking book. Filled with true, incredible accounts from actual survivors of everything from a knitting needle accident that punctured a woman's chest to WWII Concentration Camp stories. I could not put this book down. I read parts aloud to my husband. Although other reviews called it 'verbose' I saw it as packed with factual tidbits that I found thoroughly interesting. Granted, the author re-enforces the obvious (Faith DOES have a positive impact on our lives)to the not so obvious (aviation safety tips that will definitely influence my next plane flight. I once was in a plane that quickly filled with smoke and had to deplane). I think PREPAREDNESS was the key, not a survivalist philosophy but staying in tune with the immediate physicial envirnoment around us at all times. It was simply a fascinating read. Highly recommend it to others.

The Shadow Effect: Illuminating the Hidden Power of Your True Self Top Quality
If you can stomach the liberal leanings of Deepak, and the others, you might wish to read this book. (I'm returning it tomorrow! Not worth the read.) It does contain some good info beginning with 'The Birth of the Shadow' which defines what it is and how it came about.
My suggestion would be to investigate EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and use it! You will find your issues melting away in no time. Some excellent reads would be Three Magic Words by U.S. Andersen, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, Discover the Power Within You by Eric Butterworth, Awakened Imagination by Neville Goddard, The Magic of Believing by Bristol, and Ernest Holmes book This Thing Called You, for starters.
PS: Deepak doesn't mention that some of these 'altenative or green technologies' haven't worked, i.e., windmill farms which have decimated hundreds of thousands of birds, are very noisy, and have been a total failure and an enormous expense in Europe and the U.S.; the huge global warming hoax which progressives and the White House continue to egregiously deny (more money for "their" Cap and Tax coffers and pockets)and probably Deepaks too! and so on and so forth...
'Enlightened', but blinded and bleeding hearts can do just as much damage to themselves, others, a country, or the world, as those who are considered 'unenlightened' or 'in shadow'. Peace.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir Immediately
This is an extraordinary book. Ms. Walls tells an amazing story of survival of herself & family. I was engaged in her life from the first sentance. The fact that this is a true story made me wince many times. I couldn't wait to read more about her once I finished the book. I was astounded that the family not only survived, but were highly functioning adults. I have been recommending this to everyone I meet.Get more detail about The Glass Castle: A Memoir.
What to Expect When You're Expecting Best Quality
* Note: I have a copy of the Australian edition of this book. I wouldn't think the content would be any different from the original edition, apart from some Australian medical terminology, business names, contact numbers, etc. However reading some of the negative reviews here, it is possible that were some revisions and updates for the Australian edition, since I didn't find many of the criticisms in these 1-star reviews valid.
'What To Expect...' has been a very useful book for prospective first-time parents such as ourselves. The book is split into monthly chapters, with each chapter providing a wealth of useful information for that month. How you'll look, what you'll feel, common questions and problems, how far the baby has developed, what your doctor is likely to say. Other chapters deal with important concerns throughout the whole pregnancy; including food, alcohol, smoking, exercise, medication, and so forth. Labour and childbirth itself are given special sections, and it's good to see an extended section covering the physical and emotional issues a woman (and her partner) face in the postpartum period. There are so many "little" things that first-time couples wouldn't necessarily think about, and the book has certainly proved an eye-opener for the two of us so far.
I'm surprised at the negative comments about "scaring mothers" and the like. The chapter 'When There's A Problem' specifically mentions that mums who have had a complication-free pregnancy to date should skip the chapter to spare them needless anxiety. Doesn't sound much like "scaring" people to me! Really, the book's only crime is that it is comprehensive; it tries to cover all possible problems and issues that might arise, as well as many different types of lifestyles and attitudes to pregnancy. Do you prefer a more alternative or natural approach to modern medicine? Are you a recreational drug user? Are you a single mother afraid of facing things alone? Do you have a chronic health condition that may affect your pregnancy? Would you consider an abortion if your unborn baby was found to have a major problem? This is important information for various types of prospective parents, some of whom may feel frightened or isolated if their situation is not "normal". I don't understand how you can criticise a book for facing up to reality, and giving these prospective parents as much information as possible so they can make informed decisions.
As a prospective father, the only real quibble I would have is that the section for Dads is a bit brief and hand-wavey. There's a bit too much of "well you just need to put your own needs aside and be a strong man for your partner". Dads have real needs, hopes, and fears, and are increasingly involved in the birthing and nursing process. It would have been nice to spend more than 20 out of the books 500+ pages on this section in recognition of this.
That minor criticism apart, my partner and I have found this a very useful and comprehensive book that has gone a long way toward de-mystifying pregnancy for both of us. I personally found it reassuring while still being honest enough to face up to the possibility of things going wrong. Not perfect, but it has been of great benefit to us. Four stars.

The Power of Now Get it now!
I now know the definition of "nothingness". This book is it. Page after page of psycho-babel non-sense. I know those who read this will just say "you just don't get it". I would respond that is true, but only because there is nothing to get. Everything in Tolle's little world is subjective. If that is true then even words lose meaning. If the meaning of words are subjective, then why write a book to tell us everything is subjective? Tolle wrote this book and all the others for one reason - $$$$$$ Ka-ching.Get more detail about The Power of Now.

I have read a number of books on diet and nutrition and didn't expect much different from this one. I was wrong. Uniquely, this book has a large amount of science-based data on nutrition and disease and makes a compelling case for changing what we eat. This Is Why You're Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever): Eat More, Cheat More, Lose More--and Keep the Weight Off Decide Now
I am a person that has been "naturally" skinny my whole life. I fluctuated between a size 3 and a 7 for most of my adult life. After having 4 kids close together, my body seems to have taken a swing, and I cannot drop the 20 pounds that I put on with the last baby. I was excited for this book because she talks about hormones and how eating can change these levels, and help you to lose naturally. I think this might be my problem. I eat pretty good, and exercise okay, but I have not been able to lose the weight.
So, I downloaded the e version of this book (cheaper) and read it over the course of a couple days. I liked it. It was a good reminder of what I learned in the fourth grade.
Good: She basically outlines your 5 fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meat, low fat cheese, no-little milk, and NO SUGAR. It is your food-guide pyramid minus the milk. I think she is right in sugar being a culprit. That part of the book was a really good reminder, as I love kids candy. She has the basic portion control, and the 3 meals, 2 snacks a day. I like her circuit training ideas at the back of the book.
Not my favorite: She mentions a lot of studies that she does not endnote or footnote. That bothers me. I like to check facts. She links cancer to non-organic food. We have a genetic history (tested and verified by doctors) of cancer in our family. It isn't as simple as she makes it sound. No variety in meals, and for certain things, she just lists a bunch of vegetables, basically ones that I already eat, and common ones in the grocery store, again, nothing that you haven't heard from elementary school. She lists all the hormones in the body, and the specifics, and doesn't really get into the food specifics, just lists things again, telling you more like a medical book than a to-do diet book. I don't like supplements. Sure, your basic vitamins etc., but I think milk is a good thing, not too much of it, but I don't want to do a calcium supplement instead. I am lactose intolerant, and have been told my whole life, find a way to get your calcium through food, not supplements, and add in the calcium supplements as you get older.
All in all, it was a fine book. It is a huge lifestyle change to follow everything she does, and if you have a family, it doesn't seem realistic. I will follow some of the ideas. Most of them I already knew, many ideas were unfounded, and I am surprised that they let her publish references tie ins, without the actual reference noted. That is sloppy.
This is not the diet bible that everyone makes it out to believe. I think body for life is better than this, and that also requires a lifestyle change.Get more detail about This Is Why You're Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever): Eat More, Cheat More, Lose More--and Keep the Weight Off.
Getting Things Done Right now
After just finishing this book I felt I a bit confused. This book should have had some great ideas that just bounced off the pages but it was disjointed, scattered and difficult. Not the concepts, they were quite basic and intuitive, but the way the book was written just feels extremely heavy. I had a hard time focusing on what the author's points were and lost interest quickly. I was looking forward to this book but left very disappointed.Get more detail about Getting Things Done.

Discount The Omnivore's Dilemma
This book is a long journey through many accusations, and little real substance. Michael Pollan devotes the first half of the book to criticizing the corporate agricultural machines of Cargill, ADM, and Monsanto, and the politics (subsidies) behind it all, but then weakly offers the solution as independent smaller farms utilizing a grass-based system versus the giant corporate machines utilizing a corn-based system. The fact that a McDonalds meal is actually 60% carbon molecules derived from corn doesn't tell me much. Is a carbon molecule derived from corn any less healthy for me than a carbon molecule derived from wheat, or from grass? A balanced diet in either case is probably what is essential. All conjecture, no medical facts or statistics. He then spends the remaining half of the book on his noble quest of killing a wild boar, and picking mushrooms, for his all natural "gatherers meal."Get more detail about The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Purchase StrengthsFinder 2.0: A New and Upgraded Edition of the Online Test from Gallup's Now, Discover Your Strengths
I was so looking forward to reading StrenthsFinder 2.0 after seeing on the Bestseller lists for so long, and yet I find myself so disappointed that I wanted to share a review and provide another perspective on why this book fails, in my opinion, to provide true value for the reader.
The book itself is more of an outline of the Gallup Organizations 34 Key Personality Traits than an insightful overview, which was disappointing to me. In addition, the book is supported by an online test that is designed to, through 177 questions, help you to assess the 5 Traits or Qualities that are your true Strengths. I don't disagree with the assesment that the survey made, but I'm shocked by the lack of actionable feedback based on such strong data. If I wanted to "Know Myself" better, I would have spent the time and money in Meditation Lessons, not trying to capitalize on my innate strengths, as the book purports to assist with.
Perhaps I was expecting too much from a book, but I found StrengthsFinder 2.0 to be full of a lot of hype and very little substance.Get more detail about StrengthsFinder 2.0: A New and Upgraded Edition of the Online Test from Gallup's Now, Discover Your Strengths.

Where To Buy Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage
We are reading this book as part of a newlywed small group with our church.
There is definitely some good stuff in this book, and overall I would say it's opened our minds to what marital sex should really be about (serving your spouse!). Our sex life has improved after reading this book - so for that I give it a good review.
However, a lot of the ideas this author proposes are downright silly, and way too many pages are devoted to them.
This author also seems to believe every man and woman fit into the stereotype of the man always wanting it, the woman always denying and being unadventurous. He acknowledges a couple of times that this is not always the case, yet he does not devote any time at all to couples whose sex life problems don't fit the stereotype.
With my pregnancy, my husband and I have had some issues of him being not as interested in the bedroom department. I was downright offended when the author stated that the solution for this problem was to drop your towel on the way to the bathroom to give him a little eye candy. Seriously? That's your ingenious solution??? I couldn't believe that was the only advice offered for this problem.
So not a great book - but enough good stuff that it should at least help most marriages. And if you're a wife who's always denying her husband, or if you're a frustrated husband with a frigid unadventurous wife - well then this book was definitely written for you.Get more detail about Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage.
