What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting Immediately

I recently learned I was pregnant, and wanted to make sure I was eating right for the baby so bought a few books to do some research. I'm not sure this one will get much use - I may donate it to a local library, in case someone else finds it helpful.

In my opinion, the original "What to Expect When You're Expecting" is preferable to this book, as this doesn't give a lot of new info if you know have a basic knowledge of how to eat healthy anyway. The one big exception is the recipes that are included here, and the detailed breakdown of what different food options are available to meet each specific nutritional recommendation/requirement for pregnancy. Otherwise it's mainly just basic nutritional advice.

The second issue I had with the book is that there is very little information available for vegetarians, or even for those who only eat fish/shellfish. It would have been nice if there had been more vegetarian dishes, or even vegetarian options listed for the meat recipes.Get more detail about What to Expect: Eating Well When You're Expecting.

Tao I: The Way of All Life Buy Now

Tao I book is truly an incredible book. It has very profound teaching, wisdom and practical techniques for healing, preventing sickness, longevity, life transformation and much more. The 75 phases of Tao Jing, each phase has incredible wisdom and sacred knowledge. They are priceless treasures not only to the Tao practitioners, but also to all humanity, Mother Earth, and all souls in all universes, since "Tao is the Way of all life. Follow Tao, flourish; go against Tao, finish".

The Tao Jing is extremely powerful. When the first time I heard it, my soul loved it so much that I never want to stop chanting it. Whenever I chant it, it brings me to the emptiness, and I feel like I am in the heaven. Master Sha is so generous that he enclosed a full length CD with his Tao Jing and Jin Dan chanting within the Tao I book, which is really a great bonus to all the readers and listeners. Master Sha also prepared another two sources for us to learn the Tao Jing - they are the Tao Jing CD and DVD. They are amazing, with beautiful music and Master Sha's chanting.

I am so grateful that we have the opportunity to learn the Tao secrets and profound wisdom through Master Sha's Tao I book, Tao Jing CD and DVD. I enjoy them so very much and I have benefited from them for every aspect of my life. I highly recommend them to you and hope you will benefit from them too.

Thank you Divine. Thank you Tao. Thank you Master Sha. I can never thank you enough.

Delivered from Distraction Right now

I was recently diagnosed with ADHD-PI, and this book has been an excellent resource for understanding ADD in adults. I'm only about 1/2 way through, but I'm already implementing some changes in how I run my life based in part on the information and accounts in the book, as well as discussion with my doctor.

It's particularly interesting to see both the similarities and the differences between individuals with this condition, and how even with very similar core symptoms the life outcome can be quite different from person to person based upon environment, personality, and capability. So far the book has been a jumping off point for me to really think about how ADD has affected me, what about that I want to change, and what I can do to make any changes easy to implement and hard to avoid. Definitely put this on your list if you have, suspect you have, or know someone who has ADD.Get more detail about Delivered from Distraction.

Low Price Yoga Anatomy

This book does an excellent job of explaining which part of the body is used in each asana (muscle groups, tendons, etc). I particularly liked the very in depth intro describing the anatomy of how humans breathe - very useful in yoga practice. The illustrations were also great and they covered quite a variety of poses.

However, I was expecting more of a how to guide for each pose. Possibly a "make sure to keep your feet in line...tuck your tailbone...look forward to lengthen the neck...keep your thigh rotated to bring your knee out...etc" - things you hear from teachers in class that help you get the correct posture. This is not the case with this book.

I also thought the anatomy part was a little overkill. It's nice to know which part of the body is affected but I am not a doctor and to use the Latin terms just confuses me. Many times muscles were referenced in the text of a pose that did not have a label in that pose's illustration - which means I either had to remember what that muscle was or look back through the book. Not that user friendly.

Overall: good book for those who want an anatomical understanding of yoga. Not good for someone looking to supplement classes or practice on their own.

Hope this helps, Namaste.Get more detail about Yoga Anatomy.

Save An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness

This is the first book I have read about anything having to do with psychology, and I have to say, I absolutely loved it! It is extremely well written and full of useful info about mental illness; and you know it's good info coming form someone who both suffers from manic-depressive illness, and also teaches and researches it at one of the best schools in the country. It is very inspiring and really a fun and uplifting book, I could not put it down. I can't wait to read the rest of her books.Get more detail about An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness.

Cheap Good Calories, Bad Calories

Could they have gotten it wrong? All those doctors, all those dieticians? The American Heart Association? The federal government? For decades now they've been telling us to eat a low fat, low cholesterol diet for our health, that saturated fat and cholesterol were the cause of heart disease, that excess fat in the diet was the cause of obesity, that cutting out meat and eggs and butter would make us slim and healthy and prolong our lives. Could they have really gotten it all wrong? And if so, how?

Gary Taubes answers these questions, answers them brilliantly, and in depth. This book is not a quick read, but it is never short of fascinating. It is also alarming -- alarming to realize just what flimsy evidence all the low fat propaganda was based on, how little reason there ever was to believe that a low fat diet did anything positive at all.

Because I write about low carbohydrate diets (1001 Low-Carb Recipes: Hundreds of Delicious Recipes from Dinner to Dessert That Let You Live Your Low-Carb Lifestyle and Never Look Back), I was fortunate enough to be invited to hear Gary Taubes speak, both at the Mizzou School of Life Sciences, and to the Boone County Medical Association. He was extremely compelling; I recommend you look him up on youtube, and listen to him, particularly the longer lectures that are available. I promise you will not be bored.

In particular, during the talk at the Mizzou School of Life Sciences, he spoke about all the doctors and researchers he contacted, and the two questions he worked in during the conversation with each one. They all agreed that insulin was the fat storage hormone, that excess insulin stimulates fat storage. Yet asked what causes obesity, they all parroted "It's just calories in, calories out."

Smart, educated people have been brainwashed, and they include most of the medical profession, and the folks who come up with our government's dietary recommendations. You owe it to yourself to read Taubes' explanation of just how wrong they are.Get more detail about Good Calories, Bad Calories.

Buying She Comes First: The Thinking Man's Guide to Pleasuring a Woman

She Comes First:

outstanding-As opposed to those of us males who stumbled through puberty in the fifties, still burdened by an overwhelming puritan ethic that prevented even the most basic understanding of anatomy, let alone any information about physiology or even rudimentery ideas about how it all worked, the current generation will be well served by a reflective reading of this book. Men will benefit by finally having their penis's put in their proper place-no not there-I mean religated to the proper role as a contributor, rather than the end all of a woman's sexual response and pleasure. Once understood men can regain their rightful position in the sex chain, but only if they bury their egos and their misunderstanding of how women are best satisfied. Knowledge is still power, but ignore what is required at the risk of being kicked to the curb by knowledgeable women who understand how this all works. Whim wham, thank you mame' isn't going to cut it. But when women are approached correctly based on THEIR needs, men will suddenly find that sex is actually more delightful then they could have ever imagined! Shop For Food Inc.

I put off watching this Documentary film because I was afraid they'd use shock footage to indoctrinate the masses to a certain POV. In actuality I think they made the points that needed to be made about the Corporate takeover of the USA food supply and used the appalling visuals of "no so happy life on the farm" to interject the horror of the heartless bottom-line-means-all.

The sad reality is that many families are forces to continue purchasing this abomination because mom and dad work for other Evil Corporate institutions and with downsizing, off shoring and cut backing now have less income to go to many of the upscale markets where uncontaminated, unprocessed commodities can be purchased.

The Explosive Child This instant

This is an excellent "how to" guide for helping a child find acceptable ways to deal with frustration. There are lots of examples of problem behaviors along with a format for brainstorming solutions with the child. The concept is excellent, but I would suggest professional help in implementing this process into the home environment. Parents who are at their breaking point with explosive behavior may find the discipline required for this process to be difficult to implement without help. The procedures include identifying the triggers that precede explosions, prioritizing the problems, brainstorming with the child on ways to handle a problem (during periods of calm), and coming to a mutually agreeable alternative solution. I highly recommend this book.Get more detail about The Explosive Child.

The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Immediately

I've actually read this book twice - once a few years before I got pregnant, and once since I got pregnant. The first time I read it, it seemed "cheeky," if not a bit overreaching. The second time I read it, it seemed just plain out of touch with reality (and I didn't know Iovine was an ex-Playmate, but boy does that jazz it up a little - "fatty" comments from someone whose entire career was based on selling their body? No thanks...).

Vicki Iovine's writing style reminds me of those nasty old women you meet during your pregnancy that say things like "Oh, you don't even want to hear my sister's-cousin's-grandaughter's-friend's birth story, she split clear up her crack and her guts fell out!" Yeah, um, you're right...I DON'T need to or want to hear about it, so shut up. Just like I didn't need to hear Iovine's degrading talk about pregnant "fatties," droopy boobs, and having a husband who will never want to "be" with me again or find me attractive again. There are millions of women walking around on this planet that are proof that you're life doesn't end with motherhood, that you can be sexy and gorgeous and fabulous on a deeper level than you ever were before (and that's both DURING and AFTER pregnancy), and that you can live an active and healthy lifestyle during your pregnancy and be happy that you're taking care of yourself and your baby. Not saying you should go out and run 10 miles everyday...but there's nothing wrong with keeping up moderate and sustainable workouts as long as you feel good and there are no complications with your pregnancy.

I really took exception to Iovine's claim that there's no point in working out during your pregnancy because "You're just gonna get fat anyway, and it won't help you in labor & delivery." I'm sorry, but maybe that's how negative and lazy women console themselves about their bad body image and horrible labors, but I don't need that crap. For every bad story, there's a good one...it's just that the women with an axe to grind tend to whine a LOT louder. Not to say that my labor would be the best thing in the world or super easy just because I work out - but Iovine is hardly basing ANY of her claims on science or actual proven, factual information. Her entire premise is based in her seeming feelings of bitterness, rejection, and resentment of others (her husband, her self, other women, and - I sometimes think - perhaps even her children).

This book was just a total waste of money and time. Do yourself a favor and read something that actually prepares - rather than scares - you for pregnancy and birth.Get more detail about The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy.

Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life Best Quality

According to the author, none of these reviews mean anything since they are our "personal evaluations". Nevertheless, here it goes. I really hate it when someone lifts the work of numerous authors before them and tries to present it as their original work, usually by trying to coin a name for it such as the author did here. I read about 60 pages of this book then skimmed through the rest of it and realized I was wasting my time and had read it all before. Unless you have never read the first book on anger-management, group communications, interpersonal relationships or even a basic primer on Cognitive Therapy, you will not learn anything from this book. It has it points that have been well taken from all the original works that have gone before this and if you can get past the self-aggrandizing stories, you can get to the basic information. However, Rosenberg has done a great disservice not crediting the works of original authors on this subject that has been covered in better books over the last 30 years.Get more detail about Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life.

While a little glib and contrived, this is an outstanding book for modifying your behavior in an easy way to live a better life. Sounds a bit corny or overreaching, but the author presents a very clear and comprehensive picture about diet, carbohydrates and insulin. He makes it both understandable and encouraging. I highly recommend this book for people who want to live healthy, rich lives.Get more detail about The Primal Blueprint: Reprogram your genes for effortless weight loss, vibrant health, and boundless energy.

Order Difficult Conversations

This is a useful book, but in my mind, is applicable very narrowly to certain business situations.

Throughout our lives, how many times do we feel that if only we could have communicated better, we wouldn't be where we are. If I communicated more clearly and with purpose, would my relationship be better? Would my friendships be less strained? Would my interaction with my co-workers be less awkward? Would I have been promoted more quickly, or prevented being fired?

While this book doesn't present answers to such specific scenarios, the book analyzes elements having a difficult conversation in a methodical manner, 'to discuss what matters most.' In that sense, the book is instrumental for any manager to become familiar with, in order to address those instances that organizational leaders inevitably face: how to confront difficult people or situations and dealing with them in a proper manner. Analytically speaking, the authors break down the conversational approach into three types: 1) "What Happened"?, 2) Feelings, and 3) Identity Conversations.

The book itself is an offshoot of the Harvard Negotiation Project (an earlier title from that project is the famous "Getting to Yes" by Ury and Fisher).

My opinion of book's main limitations are two-fold: One is that it might best pertain to hierarchical organizations. Otherwise, it's not always helpful to have structured approach when talking about matters of heart ... it doesn't work that way in life. When it comes to things of heart, honesty, confession, and parable may be more appropriate, to present a few examples. Second limitation is that even in a business setting, what leads to difficult conversations are bad management and engagement amongst co-workers. In that case, the problems arise long before the need for a difficult conversation.

Hence, in my mind, this book is applicable very narrowly to certain business situations.Get more detail about Difficult Conversations.

Where To Buy How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Pounds Lighter, 10 Times Better

This book is definitely geared toward: 1) women who know nothing at all about style; 2) women with plenty of money; and 3) women who subscribe to the very thin blonde ideal.

About half of her advice is excellent, for example: wear your natural nails; and wear modern, flattering eyeglasses. Good advice but you probably already know that if you read any fashion magazines or books.

Unfortunately she also has some strong biases towards a certain type of female beauty. She recommends that all women lighten their hair and says that being blonde is her own best characteristic. She insists that older women should wear pink lipstick and pink lipgloss and dedicates an entire chapter to "shapewear" which, for those who fortunately remain un-indoctrinated, is the modern word for "girdle". If you are not a very light-skinned white person or if you prefer to avoid stuffing your body into a sausage-casing torture device then you will probably respond the same way I did: "What year is this again?"

Recommended if you really do not know anything at all about style and don't mind old-fashioned, "never too thin" and "never to blonde" advice. Otherwise skip this book.Get more detail about How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Pounds Lighter, 10 Times Better.

Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations

I'm an adult, and I loved this book. I only wish it had been around to read when I was a teen. Alex and Brett Harris, teens themselves when writing this book, will inspire readers of all ages to change the world by starting with their own little corner of it. There are plenty of stories about real teens, past and present, who have accomplished remarkable things. If they can do it, so can you. Lest you think this book is only for and about honor roll, type-A over-achievers, they also talk about what do to when you fail and kids who have overcome real obstacles, like intense fear of public speaking. Part of "doing hard things" is taking risks and getting outside of your comfort zone.

As a youth worker, I plan to apply the concept of high expectations to the kids I work with. As the parent of a toddler, I will definitely hang on to this book to give to my daughter when she is older. I would strongly recommend that parents also read this book so that they can discuss it with their teen.Get more detail about Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations.

The Richest Man in Babylon Review

If you have ever had stale dollar store candy, you know that the fist piece is pretty good and then as you eat more the lack of substance and quality begins to collect on your pallet. If you continue to eat the inferior candy you eventually become sick of it. That is this book.

I found the first few chapters were readable - but then my pallet began to object and by the end I could ingest no more of this pointless prose. Where is the point? Save money and instantly you will become rich? Now I see why "Think and Grow Rich" is also a frequently purchased title by those who read this book. Perhaps it is just not my style of thinking. Maybe I just don't get it. If found it entirely pointless and a waste of time and money.

At first I thought the "revelation" that we would get as readers was the the richest man in Babylon would learn he was poor - but yet rich in good things that transcended gold and silver... no the case. Then I thought the author would tell us that the 10% rule was to give to God first - and that living from a perspective of giving and stewardship would be the key to authentic wealth... not happening. In desperation I kept reading on and on thinking "surely there will be a moral to the story that has some actual merit or meaning" NO! To the contrary - it appears that all you have to do is pay yourself - and cram all the rest of your creditors into the same little confined space so they can all wait their turn - and you will be RICH! What? If that is the case, why only 10% for me? Why not everything to me and the heck with everyone else in the world?

It is this sort of thinking that causes our young people to feel they must have an iPod in four different colors and a cell phone that can do eleven things at once. This "thinking" is a part of our society that takes us AWAY from being authentic to who were were created to be - children of God (not hoarders of stuff). It's NOT ABOUT YOU!

I purchased this book on Kindle and I must also say that aside from the quality of the message, the formatting was pathetic. The entire document was one long formatting run-on sentence. Having published to the Kindle Digital Platform myself - I can say from experience that about 20 minutes of formatting work before releasing this to the public would have been all it would take to at least make the text presentable - but then, nothing could fix the content itself. Wow!Get more detail about The Richest Man in Babylon.

Politics: A Treatise on Government Best Quality

I found that Aristotle provided many brilliant insights into the political thinking, strategy, of leaders and the military. In many ways, it remains unsurpassed and it ought to be required reading in undergraduate classes on political strategy. On the downside, Aristotle referred to leaders of each city-state over decades, if not centuries, and, this made it difficult for at least this reader to fully appreciate the relevance and examples offered in this text. Brilliant and merits an A+.Get more detail about Politics: A Treatise on Government.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success Buy Now

What separates people who perform consistently well in life from those who don't? According to psychologist Carol Dweck, it's their mindset. Dweck identifies two mindsets: the good growth mind-set and the bad fixed-mindset. The fixed mindset believes that you either got it or you don't. You are either born talented or smart or gifted in some way, or you're not. Those with this mindset expect success merely from showing up and rely only marginally on preparation, hard work and learning. Unfortunately, those with a fixed mindset can never afford to fail because this would give the lie to their supposed inborn gifts. When they do fail, they sulk, feel bad, blame others and don't think about ways to improve. Eventually they stop taking risks because that may further expose them to failure and its consequences.

In contrast, those with a growth mindset do not believe that success is based on talent alone. For them, talent is a foundation on which they build. When people with growth mindsets fail at a task they may feel the same disappointments as those with a fixed mindset, and even become depressed. But instead of giving up, these people will look for ways to do better the next time because they believe that they are not "fixed" but can continue to learn and grow. They remain on a learning curve all their lives, a curve that may have its ups and downs but one that continually rises.

I found the most important advice to be how to approach parenting through a growth mindset by praising the effort more than the talent. This will help your child develop their own growth mindset as they learn that their abilities are not set in stone, that they can bounce back from a set back and grow from failures.

Dweck's claims, backed up by research and case studies, make sense, although I am always skeptical of any explanation of human behavior that reduces individuals to a few categories, in this case two. In fairness, Dweck does say that people can jump from one mindset to the other, as she herself admits to. However, theses like this one always leave me with a sense that complex human behavior has been oversimplified. For example, there were many other reasons why Enron failed, the mindsets of their top leadership being just one of them, while Dweck's use of Enron as a case study suggests that the growth mindset was the main contributor.

One other infraction: Dweck offers the following individuals as growth mindset models as reflected in their decisions and character: Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez and Tiger Woods. In hindsight, I think she would have preferred to choose other individuals - the first apparently lied to Congress, the second lied about his use of steroids and engaged in extra-marital affairs, the third also cheated on his wife. Oops.
